By SaVanna Shoemaker, MS, RDN, LD. How Nutritionists Can Help You Manage Your Health. Medically reviewed by Kathy W. A single teaspoon mixed with hot water makes an 8-ounce serving of broth, which means that you'll get servings per jar.

Seasoning bases are similar to the bouillon cubes your grandma might have used, but the flavor is closer to what you'd get if you made your own stock from scratch, and the gel consistency dilutes well in water with no gritty bits left refusing to dissolve.

Better Than Bouillon brand is known to be one of the best chicken broth substitutes thanks to its full flavor. This pantry staple is crucial for making up the base of many soups, sauces, and cooking liquid for grains, braises, and more.

Italian canned tomatoes are arguably the best-canned tomatoes to buy , with a bold flavor and a texture that breaks down well in sauces and other recipes. And San Marzano tomatoes, which only come from a specific region in Italy but have many imitators and impostors, are the best of the best.

They have fewer seeds and thicker flesh, making them less acidic and watery than other tomatoes. Costco carries ounce cans of Cento brand-certified San Marzano tomatoes in a three-pack.

Cento is an American brand but has a production facility in Campania, where these tomatoes are grown in soil enriched by the ashes from nearby Mount Vesuvius.

Having a few cans of these tomatoes in your pantry means you're never far from whipping up a tomato sauce recipe for pasta or a killer pizza sauce Really, all it takes is throwing the whole can in the blender with a pinch of salt and a sprinkling of Italian herbs.

As the season approaches, hearty chili is also on order. If you don't want to make your own tomato sauce with those canned tomatoes, Rao's Homemade brand sauces are an easy alternative. If this brand is your pasta sauce of choice, you're in good company: it's also a favorite store-bought sauce of Ina Garten.

This luxurious jarred marinara is made of plum tomatoes cooked in olive oil, onions, garlic, basil, and other seasonings.

It's consistently received high reviews from consumers and foodie publications for its decadent flavor and lush texture. But Costco's two-pack of ounce jars makes this sauce as affordable as some of the cheaper brands. Keep it in your pantry to use in spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, on pizza, or in any other way you like to use pasta sauce.

Buying dried fruit can be expensive: most packages only have a few servings and can be pricey. But with package sizes of over a pound, Costco is an excellent source of dried fruit, such as raisins, dried cranberries, dates, and apricots. One of our favorites, however, is Kirkland Tart Montmorency Cherries, which are USDA Certified Organic and come in a ounce resealable bag.

Montmorency cherries are one of the most popular varieties of tart cherries, known for their bright red flesh and delicious sweet-tart flavor.

They're also a nutritional powerhouse, with studies demonstrating that they can help with arthritis and gout, exercise recovery, heart health, and sleep regulation. When you have a bag of these cherries in your pantry, you'll find plenty of ways to use them.

Try using them in place of raisins to make the ultimate oatmeal cookies , adding them to granola or trail mix, or chopping them up and adding them to a scone recipe. Dried cherries have a place in savory recipes, too. They're delicious in the filling of a turkey roulade or in stuffed acorn squash.

Chia seeds have become a popular superfood thanks to their nutritional profile: they're high in omega-3 fatty acids and rich in fiber. But what's unique about these seeds is how they gelatinize in liquid, making them an excellent thickener. Since only a couple of tablespoons are typically needed in recipes, Costco's 3-pound bag of organic chia seeds will last you quite a while.

This non-GMO, direct-from-the-farmer bag of chia also comes in two-pack cases for 6-pounds total. These seeds can be used in a chia seed pudding by combining a couple of tablespoons with almond milk or coconut milk and letting it thicken overnight in the refrigerator.

You can customize your pudding with various sweeteners and other flavorings, such as maple syrup, vanilla, honey, fresh fruit, and chocolate.

There are other ways you can use chia seeds , from making overnight oats creamier to using a mixture of ground chia seeds and water as an egg substitute in baked goods. Tinned fish is the quintessential pantry staple. Keeping quality options on hand allows you to whip up a range of meals, create salads or tuna melts, add protein to a pasta dish, fry tuna croquettes, or try an elegant canned tuna totonno sauce.

In a pinch, cracking open a can of tuna and scooping it onto crackers makes a quick and filling snack or dinner. If you're used to tuna packed in water, you owe it to yourself to try an Italian-style, oil-packed variety instead.

One of our favorite canned tuna brands is Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil, which has a firm, moist texture and a mild flavor that lends itself well to lots of different applications.

The tuna is GMO-free and is certified dolphin-safe. Genova tuna is a little pricier than more mainstream tuna brands, but buying Costco's pack of six, 7-ounce cans makes it much more affordable. With the high-quality flavor and texture of this tuna, you'll be finding ways to use it in a gourmet meal, whether it's as a filling for onigiri or in a tuna pot pie.

There's nothing like real maple syrup on pancakes and waffles instead of the breakfast syrups that are mostly corn syrup. A one-liter jug of Kirkland Organic Maple Syrup doesn't cost much more than the smaller sizes you'd find in your supermarket, and it's Grade-A maple syrup from Vermont.

The affordable price and generous-sized jug mean you don't have to be too frugal to use the syrup in other ways, like in baked goods, as a glaze for carrots or sweet potatoes, or as a component of marinade. In fact, when you have what seems like an endless supply on your hands, you'll be more likely to check out some of the more unconventional ways to use maple syrup in the kitchen.

Imagine adding it to salad dressing or challenging your inner Laura Ingalls and drizzling hot maple syrup on finely crushed ice to make chewy candy.

And stocking up on Kirkland Signature maple syrup isn't a bad idea: recent reports show that, as with many other things, climate change is impacting the production of maple syrup.

In the near future, this sweet treat may be harder to come by. Not just to be eaten in a bowl of milk, granola is a pantry staple that is remarkably versatile. Costco carries several varieties of granola in its typical large-scale sizes, including offerings from Quaker and Kirkland Signature brands.

One of our favorites, though, is the 2. This sweet and crunchy mixture is chock-full of rolled oats, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, molasses, cinnamon, and other goodies.

Try granola in a breakfast parfait layered with yogurt, fresh fruit, and a drizzle of honey, or get creative with tasty ways to use granola , such as sprinkled on top of muffin batter for a crunchy streusel topping or finely crushed and mixed with butter to make a pie crust this is particularly good for creamy types like Key lime.

You can also mix granola with nut butter, chocolate chips, dried fruit, and other ingredients, roll the mixture into balls, and chill them to make healthy energy balls.

Granola is a good source of fiber and protein, so you won't mind sneaking a handful from the pantry every so often. If you want to expand your horizons beyond peanut butter, you'll want to stock your pantry with the ounce jar of Kirkland Signature Creamy Almond Butter from Costco.

It is available in regular or organic versions, and the only ingredients are roasted, ground almonds, so you know you're not ingesting any sweeteners or preservatives.

Almond butter can be used anywhere you'd use peanut butter, but it has a thicker consistency and a seedier, woodsy taste. Nutrition-wise, it doesn't contain as much protein per serving as peanut butter, but it does contain some valuable nutrients like vitamin E, magnesium, and calcium.

Like many all-natural nut butter, you'll see some separation of the oil, but that is a normal part of the mix. Use this Costco pantry staple in sweet or savory sauces, cookie recipes, or other baked goods; it even is one of the best substitutes for tahini.

And, of course, it makes a great PB — er, AB — and J sandwich. It was a sure sign that this topping was having a moment when Jeni's Ice Cream turned everything bagel seasoning into an ice cream flavor that sold out immediately. Although introduced two years ago, the ice cream version of this seasoning is still on the market.

Thankfully for fans, it's also much easier to get one's hands on. It's a good thing, then, that Costco sells an

What is Walmart's Flash Deals? Everything you need to know about the best Walmart deals Share. Copy Link. Updated: AM EST Jan 12, By Francisco Bernard. Everything you need to know about the best Walmart deals.

People across the country are feeling the pinch of price increases on everyday items. And that they're more aware of how they spend their money with the economy the way it is and the recession looming. I understand why. So I want cold turkey and it was for the best.

Nordstroms Rack created a website. I could never do Zulily because the types of sales they have are too hit or miss for me. I occasionally will check out Rue or Gilt or HauteLook if I am looking for an item online. But I do not check any of them regularly and have deleted all three apps. What really did them in for me was when they started selling lots of their own labels.

I pay the annual fee for the free shipping and have found their return policy to work well for me. On the other hand, I got the purse I love there for an excellent deal. They take forever to ship.

I buy things in my new size and I have intentionally bought things too small as incentives. I went on Lyst for the first time last weekend.

I had a bad experience with Rue La La that made me shy of all these sites. I bought a vintage bag but they sent it via this weird combination where Fed Ex hands the package off to USPS, which might make some sense in a rural location but this was downtown Chicago, and anyway the package never arrived, and I had to go to the post office to try to find out what happened, and the whole thing was very inconvenient and disappointing.

RLL did refund my payment, to be fair, but I really wanted the bag. I watch HauteLook for the brands that I like, especially since returns are so easy for me at Nordstrom Rack.

I pay much more attention to Nordstrom sales, though. I love a good deal so the first sites I check on a daily basis are sassysteals, groopdealz and sigbees. Not only can flash sales boost sales, but they can help clear out inventory as well.

Nordstrom Rack is strategically using a flash sale to make more space at the warehouse, and you can too. Nordstrom is offering a percentage off of already-on-sale clearance items, which is doubly exciting for customers. The bold red color of their banners, coupled with the limited time nature of the deal, maximizes the FOMO customers might feel if they fail to make a purchase.

Along with increased revenue, flash sales can help your ecommerce business get rid of excess inventory and stabilize your existing inventory. Most importantly, flash sales often drive a large audience to your site and incentivize viewers to purchase non-sale products, too.

Use flash sales periodically, and both your revenue and customer base will grow to unprecedented numbers. Editor's note: This post was originally published in April and has been updated for comprehensiveness.

During the soup tests, that means keeping the area free of cooking smells. Each testing booth has a breadbox-like compartment that can be opened, via wooden shutters, from the booth and the kitchen.

We distribute samples from the kitchen side, then close the shutters. The testers then open their shutters and reach in. We further minimize the possibility that kitchen smells will escape to the testing area by pressurizing the air in the booths so that odors that waft in make a U-turn back into the kitchen.

Before every taste test, a questionnaire is developed about the appearance, texture, and flavor of the food being tested. When panelists hear the wooden shutter close on the kitchen side, they open the compartment and take their first cup of soup.

While awaiting word the soup has cooled to the proper temperature, tasters answer questions about its appearance. Then they sip, answering questions about flavor and texture.

In a morning, each panelist might evaluate 12 soups, with breaks after every four to refresh their palates. Panelists try every soup at least three times. According to a plan developed by our statisticians, we switch up the order in which each soup is tasted. Rotating the order serves another purpose; People tend to pay more attention to the first product than to the next.

We also keep the samples unidentifiable except by taste from test to test by serving them in uniform containers identified only by random code numbers. Depending on the product category, sometimes it is more effective to use a roundtable test format instead of the booths.

That means that the panelists are served the samples while seated around a large conference table. They taste each sample, complete their individual ballots and then a discussion about the sample is led by the Sensory Project Leader.

Inexpensive BBQ Skewer Sets

Inexpensive BBQ Skewer Sets

One of the annoyances of cooking with round skewers is the food succumbing to gravity and freely rotating as you try to flip or move them. Wide skewers make it easier to fit large pieces of meat or vegetables onto them, which minimizes prep time from cutting them into small pieces.

A wide skewer is also easier to wrap ground or minced meat around. A sharp tip is important when threading proteins or hard vegetables onto your skewer. With those considerations out of the way, your skewers should be easy to handle, feel good in your hand, store in a drawer without causing chaos, and take minimal effort to clean.

Skewers with little tabs at the handle end to help slide food off are handy, but they provide hiding places for food residue and are hard to clean thoroughly. A wooden skewer is single-use — throw it away or toss it into the fire when finished with it.

This question really comes down to a question of your intent. You should soak wooden skewers for 30 minutes, minimum. Not soaking will mean flaming skewer ends the wrong type of burnt ends and bits of carbon in your food. Wooden skewers, no. Oiling metal skewers makes the threading and removal of food easier and is a natural heat conductor.

Grilling on skewers is a fast cooking method, so you want to avoid cuts with large amounts of connective tissue that require slow cooking to break down. We actually use filet mignon, which has barely any marbleization, but the quality and the technique take center stage for a cut like this.

Ribeye is another great alternative. Greg Baker is an award-winning chef, restaurateur, and food writer with four decades of experience in the food industry. Norpro Stainless Steel Skewers. Best Splurge. Best Wooden. Garsum BBQ Sticks Bamboo Skewers. Design Popal, who serves an extensive selection of kebabs in her restaurant, has strong skewer opinions. Our tester liked the fact that they have no handles.

They are flat all through and that helped with the overall balance of the skewers when shaping ground meat on them. Plus, the skewers are thick, which ensures a uniform spread of heat.

Our tester was able to shape ground meat seekh kebabs and kabab koobideh on the skewers with ease. The meat stayed on the skewers right from the start. She also cooked some kebabs on a skewer rack like this one to see if the skewers would stay afloat and cook meat from all sides.

The skewers stayed on the rack, and she was able to turn the meat to cook on all sides. The angled tip helped load up the skewers with larger chunks of meat, whole tomatoes, whole peppers, and big chunks of fruits. The amount of time it took for the end of the skewers to cool down was faster than the other skewers we tested.

Our tester noted that using smaller mittens and tongs to turn these was more efficient than using tongs alone. Even though they aren't dishwasher safe, cleaning the skewers is easy and a quick scrub with soap and water is all they need.

The only downside to these skewers is that they are 1 inch wide. This made them too wide to be used on any smaller cuts of meats or vegetables. Our tester also said there is a bit of a learning curve. Releasing ground meat kebabs from the skewers took some practice and had to be done immediately after cooking finished.

These skewers come in two fun motifs—fish and steer—and are a fun conversation starter, in addition to being perfect for shrimp. The skewers are constructed as small pointy branches jutting out from the length of the spine.

During testing, our reviewer found that grilling shrimp on these skewers was so easy. The prongs held onto the shrimp, and they stayed put throughout the grilling. You have to be careful when turning any seafood on skewers as it tends to fall off or spin—but not with these skewers.

The shrimp, whether coated in a thick marinade or simply tossed into some seasonings, stayed on the skewer during testing. Turning these skewers needed slight maneuvering and learning as the skewer itself is small, and once loaded, the weight concentrates.

In the absence of handles, our tester found that using a sturdy pair of tongs did the job nicely. She also found it convenient to make a skewer with meat on one side and veggies on the other so that anything that cooked faster could be removed and then the skewer put back on the grill to complete cooking.

One thing to note is that it is somewhat difficult to load up food on these because you are going with a sideways force.

Our tester found it easier to load the skewers from the top, and if using two kinds of ingredients, fared better with threading lighter items on first. They are dishwasher safe and get completely cleaned in a regular dishwashing cycle.

Material: Stainless steel Length: 12 inches Number of Pieces: 4 Dishwasher Safe: Yes. These bamboo skewers are meant for fun food on sticks and food that you want to make portable.

These sturdy 4-millimeter-thick skewers can be used to make candied apples, fruit kebabs, or a Caprese salad. If there is a food you want on a skewer, these skewers will make that happen. The tips of these skewers are pointed and sharpened to a degree angle, and our tester found that she could easily thread meat and vegetables on them.

The skewers and the ends are polished and smooth. Our tester was able to thread on cubes of meat and vegetables for grilling with no problems.

With things like beef tenderloin kebabs, the skewers performed well as the time required to cook these was less than when the skewers were used to make a chicken kebab. For anything that required time, the skewers charred a lot and larger pieces of food also started to spin.

In our testing, these performed the best when used with meats that needed less time to cook and meats and vegetables cut into smaller sizes. They are available in a variety of sizes, and while disposable, the price is inexpensive enough to make them a good value.

Material: Bamboo Length: 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 inches Number of Pieces: Dishwasher Safe: No. For cooking things like chicken that require more cooking time, the skewer ends charred, but for most things, the skewers stayed intact.

Metal skewers spread heat evenly for uniform cooking. When in doubt, always use a flat square-shaped metal skewer for kebabs, like these, which performed well in testing. Plus, these elegant skewers are designed to be shown off.

They received top marks by our tester for being so presentable. Simply lift them off the grill and take them straight to a platter to present the food.

The elegantly designed handles helped with gripping the skewer to lift or turn. While the metal used in the skewer is thinner to make it versatile for both vegetables and meats, our tester found that it is strong enough to hold on to thick cuts of steak without collapsing.

The square shape of the prong in these skewers helped keep food on the skewer without moving around. Our tester hand-washed them, and they need to be dried immediately.

Otherwise, they rust and stain, as our tester found out the hard way when she just left them in the sink. Material: Carbon steel Length: 15 inches Number of Pieces: 4 or 6 Dishwasher Safe: No.

The square shape helps keep food from spinning around. Sitting around a campfire or a backyard fire pit and telling stories under starry skies while roasting marshmallows is what summer nights are all about. To keep these nights fun and safe, long-pronged skewers like the Aoocan Marshmallow Roasting Sticks come in quite handy.

These skewers extend to 45 inches, which allows a safe distance from the firepit. Our reviewer appreciated the telescopic extension because some of the children that were invited for testing were comfortable only from the longest distance while other children chose smaller lengths.

This gave all the children an opportunity to join in safely. The children also loved that they could pick the colors they liked and choose whether to toast one marshmallow or two at the same time. The grip on the heat-resistant handles was comfortable for children and adults alike.

The skewers feature a double-pronged design to hold on to marshmallows as they puff up while roasting, and the tips can be covered with two mini safety caps when the skewers are not in use.

While roasting marshmallows, the marshmallows stayed on the skewer even after getting toasty and melty. No marshmallows were lost to the firepit during testing. These also worked well with hot dogs. The skewers are cleaned easily with some water. Our tester ran them through the dishwasher multiple times and the colors on the handles did not show any signs of wear.

The Timeless Steel Lula Kebab Skewers are our top pick. These stainless steel skewers are sturdy, rust-resistant, and performed well in testing no matter what foods were grilled.

If you're looking for an everyday option that won't break the bank, the Norpro Stainless Steel Inch Skewers are a solid choice. We scoured the market and rounded up top-rated skewers in a variety of materials and designs and at a variety of price points and sent them to our home tester to be evaluated side by side.

The skewers were used to grill meat, veggies, and seafood—and one set we tested with marshmallows. Each set of skewers was rated on its material, design, strength, ease of cleaning, and overall value.

Our tester gave additional insights into the skewers' strengths and weaknesses and what they are best suited for at your next backyard BBQ. What you like to cook will somewhat determine how you shop for these grilling essentials.

If you like to grill mostly vegetables or make kebabs infrequently, you might find that a set of bamboo skewers is sufficient for your use. However, if you grill a lot of meats, you might find that a set of metal skewers would better suit your needs and be better able to handle the weight of the food.

Finally, if you're going to serve foods as an appetizer, you'll want ones that are shorter, so they fit more easily on a plate. Do you need the skewers to be dishwasher safe? Are you okay with them being disposable, or doing a little hand-washing if need be?

Keep in mind, too, that metal skewers do much better over very high heat, and flat metal skewers can handle heavier pieces of meat more easily. You want a skewer that will support the weight of the food without rolling around on the grill and that won't lose any food once you turn it.

Does it feel balanced once you put meat and other ingredients on it? Is it long enough and sturdy enough to maintain a balance without ingredients falling off onto the grill? If you do a lot of grilling, it's definitely worth the small investment to get a set of skewers that are designed for the grill.

It makes the process a lot easier to manage and helps to ensure even cooking and easy retrieval of your food from the grill.

Wooden skewers need to be soaked for 20 to 30 minutes before using them so that when you put them on the grill, loaded with food, they don't catch on fire. If they're waterlogged, they won't become a fire hazard.

It's a great idea to use a little bit of cooking oil not extra-virgin olive oil or a nonstick cooking spray on your skewers before loading them up.

This way, ingredients won't stick to them when it's time to remove them. Renu Dhar is a culinary instructor, personal chef, food writer, and product tester. She has tested dozens of products for The Spruce Eats, including several grills, and she personally tested every item on this list.

Vegetables like cabbage and sweet potatoes are inexpensive year-round and can be great fillers and substitutes in recipes.

I stock up on things like these when they are in season, usually buying several cases of sweet potatoes in the fall from farmers markets. Cabbage costs just pennies a pound from farmers when in season, and can be made into sauerkraut for later use.

Winter squash also stores well and we buy this in bulk too. Though there is more of a cost upfront, ordering in bulk can usually save money in the long run. We order non-perishables like coconut flour, shredded coconut, olive oil, coconut oil, herbal teas, liquid castile soap, almond flour, etc.

While it may cost a little more, there are also convenient produce box delivery companies. Even if you live in a big city, it is often possible to grow at least some of your own food.

Our garden has varied from a 25 x 40 foot garden to 4×4 square foot boxes for vegetables each year. We also have fruit trees, grape vines, and blueberry bushes in the works this year. These were popular during the World Wars … the ideas was that we could all contribute by growing some of our own food.

Bonus: Gardening has many health benefits besides the delicious and healthy food. This can mean many different things to different people, but is essentially the next step up from backyard gardening.

Depending on where you live, having bees, livestock, or chickens is a way to cut down the food bill and potentially even have enough to share or sell for extra income.

Here are some tips to get started. Preserving is another great way to cut down a food bill. Freezing, dehydrating, and canning are all great ways to extend the harvest. One year, I was able to can all of our tomato products for the year to cut down on BPA exposure from canned tomatoes.

Last year, we also canned condiments and pickles, and will do this again. Dehydrating is another option, though it takes a while and can be a slow process, at least with my dehydrator. If money is tight, look for dehydrators and canners at garage sales and thrift stores to save money over buying new.

If not, do it now! This alone is a big percentage of most food bills and a big step in improving overall health. Cutting those items from the food budget will often free up a lot of cash for healthier options.

But, I did stop buying produce at Aldi, even though their prices are low. So now I pay more for better stuff and our budget is too high.

Every household should definitely keep potatoes on hand. While they sometimes have a negative reputation, potatoes are packed with nutrition. The great thing about popcorn is that it's very versatile. You can add toppings such as sea salt and cheese for a savory treat, or cinnamon and sugar for a delicious sweet treat.

Hi DMWalsh, great comment. If I buy a case of canned goods and see a can that is dented, I return to the store for a replacement can. I learned too much at my Master Canning class about botulism. I feel so good knowing I have some cases of canned food because I can eat them right out of the can if I had to.

Great comment, Linda. Hard for me since I like to cook from scratch; made a coffee cake yesterday…pretty good. One thing I have noticed about stocking up if there is a can limit is that using the store rewards card is not always the best idea!

I purchased the limit during a sale and decided to go back to get more a few days later. When I checked out, I used my store rewards card both times. On the second trip, the checker told me that I had already purchased the store limit on that item.

Just an FYI, be sure to check your store policy. I agree with dmwalsh on purchasing marked down cans. This can also apply to the normal stock on the shelves.

I have seen these sales primarily for boxed goods but this is a way to save big money!! They are great to supplement our storage. I always repackage these for longer term storage. Also, if you do purchase these types of meals, they are a great way to support your local food bank at a reasonable cost to you.

It feels so good to donate to the food bank because there are so many that need the food we give to them. I take out the expired cans and put several of them in zip lock bags, seal and freeze.

Storing them is no waste and it makes room for more in my pantry. I know to use them 1st when cooking. Just my tip! Happy freezing.

Hi Brenda, when you do this are you taking the food out of the cans, right? I love it! Yes mam. I usually put 2 open cans to a bag in case company comes and then discard the cans or save clean cans for storing things later!!

Linda, With your Store rewards cards you can stock up on other things too. I bought Red Barons Pizzas for 1.

True not as good as homemade but awfully good. I looked in another store I shop at and they are almost 5. Also our local store has a app and I buy the sale items. They had 4 pound bag of sugar for 99 cents with the app. so I got it plus I got some other sale items. Walmart carries several canned items, for 50 cents.

Love finding these win-win deals! Our store reward system also gives us points for money off gas per gallon. We can also use it for money off our grocery purchase. We save it for gas though. We usually fill up once a month or longer. In fact, we filled up right after Christmas and still have almost a full tank.

All are within miles from home. Hi Deborah, wow, we can use ours for gas which we do but not food. I love the rewards system, thanks for the reminder!!! I love these tips Linda, thank you!

Many stores in our area have purchase limits of 4 canned goods. Things are getting very scary at our stores. I pray for us all.

Hi Amy, thank you! Things are so crazy, grab what you can! My mom used to take us to the grocery store with her when there were limits. My brother and I would get the limited amounts too — so 3 times the limit.

I shop with friends so they get extra for me and I get extra for them. Hi Jennifer, I do the same thing. I remember someone telling me he was making some chili that called for 5 cans of beans. The limit was 2. He went to multiple stores!! Dollar General and Dollar Tree can be reasonable as well.

Coconut milk is more expensive at our Aldis. Juices are lower priced at Walmart, but lately they are out of stock most days.

I have bought frozen, juice concentrate as an option because it takes up less storage space in the freezer than large bottles of juice do in the pantry. Our local grocery stores often have good sales on dried beans and lentils so I take a pass by those each time I am in just to see if there is a sale on.

We really do need to be diligent about looking for buys at different stores. I love my case lot sales, they are priced way below the normal prices. Or olives.

I believe things are going to get worse before they get better. I hope people have the food they need. We just bought 8 more lbs of pinto beans and 10 more lbs of white rice. I have all kinds of seasonings for them.

We are having an encore meal left overs tonight. We like to cook enough for two meals. That way all we have to do is reheat. One of my favorites is soup or stew. I love soup and stew all year. I think I could eat soup every day.

I like a lot of juice, hubby likes the veggies and meat. Good team we have. Hi Deborah, oh I love hearing this, squeal! No beans were on the shelves this week in my area. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your encore meal idea!!

LOL Linda, we only use our points for gas, too. I will probably be using some toward groceries toward the end of the month though. Waste not, Want not! Just returned from a 70 mile round trip to the nearest IGA Independent Grocer.

Yes, we prefer home canned but gardens can be unreliable. We also got great deals on peanut butter, shredded cheese and buttter. And pasta sauce! AND…Tuesday is old fahts discount day!!

Hi Beth, what a blessing!! I love homegrown but we need all we can get right now. Plus, you got PB, cheese, butter, and spaghetti sauce! That was a GREAT day! I make a lot of my food from scratch as the preservatives in manufactured foods exacerbates a medical condition I have.

Hi A Barn, I love being able to order online!! I love hearing this, thank you for sharing! I learned the hard way not to buy the generic brand case lot veggies and fruits. Our favorites are Green Giant for veggies and Del Monte for fruit. Explains why there canned veggies are better. Same thing for Del Monte regarding fruit.

We also get large quantities of canned albacore chunk tuna in water and other canned meats from Costco. We got some Del Monte corn one time and when I opened the can, there was a big green worm there.

I do eat frozen corn. Ray, I already had some protein, chicken. Even if it was cooked. LOL I did have a boyfriend in first grade, no kindergarten, that did eat worms, but only dirty ones.

We are also lucky to have a Costco to get canned meats, you gotta love the quality! I wish we did but I do the best I can with coupons, sales, and of course canning vegetables from my own garden during the summer months.

Revisiting this block post! So, Brenda Marsh mentioned that when a canned item is past the best by date, she removes the food and packages for the freezer. You could also dehydrate many of the canned food. It would take up much less space and if packaged right, could last for several years.
