But free trials still offer the same benefits they always have: Improves conversion rate Showing a potential customer that your product fits their needs will reduce their reluctance to make a purchase and increase your conversion rate in the process.

Increases customer satisfaction If your product isn't a fit for the customer's needs, the best time for them to find out is before they give you money. Lets customers "try before they buy" There are often a lot of choices for potential customers. Shows off your confidence in the product If you know you have the best solution to your target audience's pain points, there's no reason not to show them, rather than telling them.

When designing your free trial, there are several factors to consider: 1. Payment information Some free trials simply expire when their time limit is up and require the user to pay before they can use the software again.

Limitations The most important thing to consider is what limitations you'll place on the trial. Trial period Most free trials last two to four weeks before they expire and the customer is expected to pay. Onboarding time How long does it take a customer to learn your product?

Top free trial examples Some of today's biggest brands used free trials to build themselves into the giants they are today. What can you do with your abandonment metrics? Evaluate - Using the data provided by ProfitWell Metrics, you can compare users who choose to upgrade with those who don't.

Is your free trial failing to reach a certain demographic? Are users who don't upgrade not utilizing certain features? Answers to these questions can change your approach to marketing and alert you to missed opportunities to highlight certain features.

Introduce smart incentives - Typical incentives for free trials include extra time for referring to friends, a cheaper price for those who cancel, a discount on a higher-priced tier of the product, and more.

Analytics about who is not converting and why will help you tailor these incentives to the people who most need that extra push.

Consider changes to product features - With analytics, you can examine how users are engaging with your software. This can help you to identify pain points in the user's experience.

While this information is always helpful in determining how to add or make changes to features, focusing on problems with those failing to convert provides a good starting point for what to prioritize to make the most impact on conversion rates.

As the market space gets crowded, prospects for profits and growth reduce. Products become commodities, and cut-throat competition turns the ocean bloody red.

Blue Ocean companies, in contrast, access untapped market space and create demand, and so they have the opportunity for highly profitable growth. In Blue Oceans, competition is irrelevant. Yes, imitators arise, but experience shows there is a wide window of opportunity to stay ahead of imitators.

It will probably fail. In a red ocean, prospects already know how your product can help them, and a self-service model is advantageous - it can widen your funnel, decrease your CAC, and help you expand globally in a fraction of the time.

Take live-chat software as an example: When it first came to market, most companies started with traditional sales- and marketing-led GTM strategies. After the category matured, however, it became almost impossible to find a live chat application without a self-service model.

For example, when we first launched an event app in , no one knew they wanted it - a self-serve product didn't make sense. Fast forward to , and self-serve is now a valid GTM strategy, though customers still expect heavy service support. If we had launched self-serve back then, we would've failed.

In my opinion, self-serve is the only distribution worth undertaking once the market is mature. Makers are people who try before they buy.

They want to understand what a product is really about and how it can solve their problems. Often, makers are individual contributors to a business. They execute on the business strategy. They are doers. Shakers are members of high-level management i. This is known as a top-down marketing approach.

As a result, shakers are often inundated with countless sales emails and privy to demo requests. Because if you pair a top-down marketing approach with a self-service model, your demo requests will outperform the self-service arm of the business.

This outcome is true even with a top-performing free-trial or freemium model. Your marketing approach needs to sync with your self-service model.

Previously, at Vidyard, we launched a freemium product known as GoVideo while keeping the main arm of the business, a top-down marketing approach. If you target makers, leading with a free trial or freemium model may work really well. These are end-users who can experience the core value of your product and make a convincing case to shakers.

Generally, a top-down marketing approach works well with a sales- or marketing-led GTM, while a bottom-up approach works best with a product-led approach. To create a successful product-led business, you need a quick time-to-value, which will increase product adoption and activation rates.

To break this down into a science, BJ Fogg from Stanford University did an incredible study that gives us a model to reduce the time-to-value in any product through motivation, ability, and triggers.

The Fogg model below helps us understand the four business scenarios that affect whether people adopt a new target behavior in a product. Reduce friction. While we can try to motivate users, it's often easier and more cost-effective to optimize your self-service experience. Any product that significantly reduces the time-to-value and steps to complete a task will enjoy high adoption rates.

This sounds obvious, but many companies unknowingly add friction to a buying process by doing things like:. At Vidyard, we tested this strategy by launching GoVideo and refining our freemium go-to-market strategy.

It was far from perfect when we launched, but we were able to improve it and acquire ,s of new users in the process. This, in turn, helped the business prove that the model was effective and build a small in-house team that knew how to bring a self-service product to market.

If you have a product with lots of features, this strategy can work great. As long as your freemium version is valuable, you can layer on free-trial upgrades within the freemium product.

HubSpot has been doing this successfully for a while now. When you sign up for the free marketing and sales tools, you get immediate value from the product.

But, as you get more value from the free product, they tempt you with free-trial landing pages for blocked features. This is great because it allows the user to experience the new feature for a limited amount of time before upgrading.

If, for example, a higher percentage of new subscribers come from Twitter posts rather than newsletter responses, then a good strategy would be to focus on increasing social media engagement rather than building further email lists.

Subscription intelligence can help subscription companies make the best decisions regarding their free trial strategies.

Once the free trial has ended, it's a shame to lose a customer just because making a payment becomes difficult. Subscription businesses should make sure it's easy for customers to submit their payments.

It is important to provide a wide variety of payment options so subscribers can select their preferred method.

Your free trial offer has a time limit. Once the deadline to cancel passes, you may be on the hook for more products or services and more payments. Monitor your credit and debit card statements. That way you'll know right away if you're being charged for something you didn't order.

Before a company can auto-renew your subscription, it has to send you a renewal notice. Tip: If you get a renewal notice that asks for your credit card information, stop. Read the notice carefully.

The company may be trying to get you to renew an old subscription that you canceled. Or it could be a scammer lying about the renewal notice to get your credit card information. Check that the cost is what you expected. This can happen if you initially had a promotional rate.

Tip: Sometimes you can cancel a subscription and re-subscribe for a better promotional rate. Just make sure that you know exactly when that promotional period ends, and mark it on your calendar.

Scammers sometimes send fake renewal notices to get your financial information. Otherwise, just ignore it. For example, you agree to try a box of products free for a month. Or you get a magazine subscription that renews automatically when it expires. Those are negative options. Your silence is taken as consent to be charged.

First, contact the company that runs the subscription you want to cancel. If the company has instructions on how to cancel, follow those.

By tracking as much of your user's interactions as possible and comparing that with customers who allow their trial to lapse, you can glean keen insights that will help you improve your conversion rate.

We handle your payments, tax, subscription management and more, so you can focus on growing your software and subscription business. While freemium may lack features that are present in the premium version of a product, it still provides the user with a complete experience. They can make full use of the features it does have for an unlimited amount of time, for free.

Free trials prevent this. They either expire or otherwise limit the software so users can get a feel for what it can do without having unlimited access to any of its features. The length of a free trial should be as short as possible to show the customer what your product can do. Common time frames are 7, 14, and 30 days.

The time you choose for your software should depend on how quickly they can get up to speed. A trial should not end before the customer has had a chance to learn about and explore the key features of the software.

When properly designed, free trials can increase both conversions and customer satisfaction. Webinar Going global the right way: Unlock international SaaS growth - Feb 7th Join us. Offering free trials: Everything you need to know. What is a free trial?
