As schools have faced funding challenges in recent decades, arts programs are the first to go. But not many people actually do something about it. Sherrie Zeitlin is different. The Arizona ceramicist and longtime arts activist runs the Art Resource Center , a nonprofit with a simple mission: collect donations of art supplies, put them in a giant warehouse and let teachers take whatever they want.

Everything is free or available for a self-determined donation. And the term "art supplies" is a really loose definition. The Show's Lauren Gilger got a tour of the center in Tempe recently and spoke with Zeitlin to learn about her mission and inspiration.

She continued to explore her interests in high school and eventually, it led her to study fiber arts and accessory design at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

She makes it a point to share her skills and offer support to others. Jones was working at a specialty leather accessory shop at the time and joined a local community group on Facebook to help people with minor mending projects, like sewing buttons or hemming garments. After members expressed so much interest in learning these skills, another Facebook community group formed in with Jones at the helm: The South Silly Craft Coven.

But it grew to be so much more than that. The Craft Coven became both an online and offline space for creative people or creatively-curious people to get together, learn skills, work on projects, and have a good time.

It was also a way for people to give away items and materials they were no longer using. All options required some level of coordination and none of it was ideal.

After living in South Philadelphia for a decade, Jones moved to West Philadelphia in , where she encountered little free libraries regularly. Jones got to work to make the library a reality. The first one was supposed to be installed in , but Jones was ahead of schedule so it was able to go up sooner than anticipated.

Jones says that anyone can drop off supplies or take any — with one condition. If someone can make something with it, then it has a place in the Supply Library.

That will give you an idea of how much a company would have to spend on one post in order to get the reach your average posts get already.

Then just back out of the promotion. Not to mention, the retail value of a product is marked up from the actual cost of making the product…. If you approach a company first, be mindful of the value of the products you request when compared to the value you can give the company.

By looking at the cost of advertising vs. the reach on your posts like we did above, you can get a better idea of what kinds of products you can realistically expect to get for free.

Building a social following takes a lot of work, and if you start to pollute your brand with content your followers have no interest in, then you risk losing dedicated followers. Though, you can get away with posting company shoutouts in your stories that stray from your brand a bit.

Free supplies are great, but free supplies plus a paycheck is even better. Though, to get a general idea of what you can be paid as an influencer check out this Influencer tool by Influencer Marketing Hub. You can get free supplies if you work for it and create opportunities for yourself.

Keep in mind that companies will be more willing to work with influencers who can clearly benefit them. Sell yourself. If you think of something you would like to have added to the library, make a suggestion when you sign in.
